Schools Music Project 2017/18
The NCM Education Programme for students has benefited from some generous donations, for which we are extremely grateful. These have enabled NCM to support young people a) by directly organising some events and b) by working in partnership with others with similar musical education aims, to promote active participation. It is extremely rewarding to see pupils and their teachers gaining great fun and inspiration from the music and hopefully giving them ideas to work with.
a) ‘Listening and learning’ through our Schools Music Project gave a high quality live musical experience to approximately 800 children in five Primary Schools, at Eaton, Cringleford, Bignold in Norwich, Costessey Junior School and Yaxham near Dereham. The pupils and teachers enjoyed workshop presentations in their own schools and a final concert involving seven musicians from the professional group ‘Chroma’ in the John Innes Centre. The theme was based on the Beatles album of Sergeant Pepper and was great fun, capturing the children’s attention by the variety of instruments, including strings, clarinet, piano and the great rhythms and the fantastic skills of the jazz drummer!
b) ‘Participating in music making’ was realised in three ways:
i) through financial support to Sistema Norwich, which promotes tuition programmes for orchestral playing in Primary Schools and is extending its work to allow older pupils to continue. Our support will help enable teenagers to build on their instrumental learning and stage concert performances
ii) through the forging of new links and support for Norfolk Centre for Young Musicians, (NCYM) helping talented young people aged 8 to 18, from across the county
iii) through funding a prize for the Norfolk Young Wind Player of the Year.
