Yaara Tal & Andreas Groethuysen (piano duet)
Venue: John Innes Conference Centre
Schumann. Bilder aus Osten Op.66
Brahms. Variations on a Theme of Schumann Op.23
Schubert. Sonata in C major D.812 (‘Grand Duo’)
Yaara Tal and Andreas Groethuysen have been championing the piano duet repertoire for more than 30 years. Their programme here includes the largest of all four-hands masterpieces, Schubert’s ‘Grand Duo’ – a “symphony in disguise”, as Schumann called it. Schumann’s own ‘Bilder aus Osten’ reflects his interest in things oriental; while Brahms’s Variations on a Theme of Schumann is a touching tribute to the older composer, based on the last piece of music he was able to write down before he sought refuge in an asylum.
