Mendelssohn. Songs Without Words (selection)
Haydn. Sonata in D major Hob.XVI:51
Mozart. Sonata in A major K.331 (‘Turkish Rondo’)
Scriabin. Five Preludes Op.74
Mussorgsky. Pictures at an Exhibition
A welcome return from Paul Lewis, whose programme includes the most famous of all Mozart’s solo piano works, with its ‘Turkish Rondo’ finale, and one of the least known of the great sonatas by Haydn. Mendelssohn’s ‘Songs Without Words’ belong among his most original creations, while the second half of Lewis’s programme encompasses the aphoristic style of Scriabin, and the grandeur of Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’.
