Pre-concert discussion with Steven Isserlis, 6:30pm

Venue: John Innes Conference Centre

Mendelssohn. Variations concertantes Op.17
Schumann. arr Isserlis. Violin Sonata in D minor Op.121
Moscheles. Sonata Op.121
Chopin. Introduction and Polonaise brillante Op.3

Steven Isserlis is another familiar and popular NCM artist. The four composers represented in his concert with his regular pianist Connie Shih were all friends and mutual admirers. Ignaz Moscheles dedicated his passionate Cello Sonata to Schumann, whose own Violin Sonata in D minor is here rescued from neglect by Isserlis’s transcription for cello and piano. Mendelssohn’s ‘Variations concertantes’ were written for his cellist brother Paul; while Chopin’s early ‘Polonaise brillante’ is salon music on the highest level.
